Geospatial information is essential at every stage of the disaster cycle: disaster mitigation, preparedness, emergency response, and recovery. Traditionally, the preparation and provision of geospatial information for disaster prevention has been primarily carried out by public institutions and private organizations commissioned by them, but with new technology in recent years, activities of large numbers of anonymous citizens to participate voluntarily in the development of geospatial information to provide geospatial information are expanding. In particular, in the event such as when a large-scale disaster occurs and when public institutions have insufficient resources, such voluntarily created open geospatial information is expected to play a major role in disaster response. Here, we will introduce Crisis Mapping, a project in which citizens around the world create maps of disaster-affected areas when disasters occur, and `Natural Disaster Monument by Everyone' project, in which citizens find evidence of natural disasters left behind by their predecessors while walking around town.
