In Japan, where natural disasters occur frequently, as shown by the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred in this New Year, it is essential to enhance the earth and planetary scientific knowledge of the entire Japanese public in order to create a sustainable society and realize a society that can prevent disasters. The Earth and Planetary Science Committee has organized the Human Resource Development Subcommittee for many years to discuss the development of the field of earth and planetary science and related education. The Subcommittee issued an Advisory Opinion entitled "Importance of Earth Education in Primary, Secondary, and Lifelong Education: As a Prerequisite for Living on a Changing Earth" (June 23, 2020: https://www.scj.go.jp/ja/info/kohyo/pdf/kohyo-24-t291-3.pdf), which emphasizes the significance of earth and planetary science education, human resource development, and lifelong education. We have held a meeting of the heads of earth and planetary science departments in whole Japanese national universities every year, in associated with the JpGU annual meeting, where we have conducted questionnaires, shared information, and discussed how to respond to various issues. In the 26th term (October 2023-September 2026), the Subcommittee is renamed the Subcommittee for Fostering the "Next Generation" in light of Japan's rapidly declining birthrate/population. In addition, educational responses in the field of earth and planetary sciences in accordance with new social trends, such as the use of generative AI in the field of science education, which has become widespread in the recent years, will also be discussed. During this term, we plan to compile and make a new opinion based on past discussions and the data of nearly 10 years of surveys at department chairs' meetings, with advice from geography and geoscience teachers and experts in these field.
