[U13-06] Current Status of Earth, Planets and Space in 2024

EPS (Earth, Planets and Space) is a peer-reviewed open-access journal published on behalf of five societies; Society of Geomagnetism and Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences, The Seismological Society of Japan, The Volcanological Society of Japan, The Geodetic Society of Japan, and The Japanese Society for Planetary Sciences. EPS covers a broad area in earth and planetary sciences with particular foci on geomagnetism, aeronomy, space science, seismology, volcanology, geodesy, and planetary science.
Since 2014, EPS has been published as an open-access journal under the SpringerOpen platform. About half of the Editorial Board members are from outside Japan and more than half of the submissions are from overseas. EPS publishes the following article types: (1) "Full paper", (2) “Express Letter” which aims at fast publications, (3) “Frontier Letter” for leading-edge research only with the invitation from the editor-in-chief, and (4) “Technical report" which describes technical developments for scientific researches. In addition to regular publication, EPS promotes topical article collections called special issues about various geoscientific events (earthquakes and volcanic eruptions) or scientific missions (satellite missions). Recently published special issues deal with the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption and related phenomena, effects of surface geology on seismic motion, new insights in planetary science with Hayabusa and Hayabusa2 missions, and magma migration and eruptions in a volcanic group such as the 2017-2018 activity of the Kirishima Volcano Group.
On average, EPS receives about 300 submissions and publishes about 180 articles every year. The 2-year impact factor (IF) of EPS is 3.0 and the 5-year IF is 2.7 as of 2023, which has been improving in the long term since 2014. Currently, it takes about 70 days for the first decision, and 200 days for the publication of Full Paper. We are trying to shorten these times keeping high-quality reviews.
EPS is an important scientific contribution from Japan to the global geoscience community. We expect to receive more submissions of important science results from JpGU members.
