Since the establishment of JpGU, having international academic journal to publish research results from Japan has been an earnest wish of the community and continued efforts have been made by all parties involved. Grant-in-Aid for Publication Scientific Research Results by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) was reorganized and strengthend in 2013 to support the launch of the open access journal from Japan. Taking advantage of this opportunity, JpGU decided to launch the journal "Progress in Earth and Planetacy Science" (PEPS). At that time, I served as a chairman of the steering comitte of the journal "Earth, Planets and Space" (EPS) and worked on the transformation of the journal to open access publishing. I cooperated with JpGU to launch PEPS, which was also published from Springer-Nature. The journal session started in 2013 with the help of invited knowledgeable speakers to notify the presence and merit of PEPS, and to deepen understanding of open access publishing. Here, I would like the audience to look back the history of PEPS and the journal session, and discuss the possibility of further advancement of adademic publishing from JpGU and related academic societies in the future.
