[U15-P76] Field surveys of the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake tsunami from Sakata, Yamagata prefecture to Matsue, Shimane prefecture
Keywords:The 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, Tsunami, Field survey, Runup height, Inundation height
We report on field surveys of the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake tsunami that occurred on January 1, 2024. The surveys covered the coastal areas of Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture, to Himi City, Toyama Prefecture (from January 30 to February 2, 2024), Sado Island (February 19 to 21, 2024), and Hakui City, Ishikawa Prefecture to Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture (March 25 to 27, 2024). The northern coast of the Noto Peninsula (Wajima City, Suzu City, etc.) is not included.
The field surveys were conducted mainly from interviews with people involved in the fishing cooperative and residents living near the fishing port. The main information collected was eyewitness accounts of tsunami inundation, inundation traces, and the arrival time of the tsunami. GNSS surveying was also conducted to estimate the height of the tsunami.
The main findings in the area from Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture to Himi City, Toyama Prefecture, are as follows. The highest tsunami height was 2.7 m (T.P.) at Ichiburi, Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture. This value was measured based on the tsunami inundation trace left on the wharf, which were photographed by the staff of a fishery cooperative. The tsunami height decreased gradually northward from this point, and heights of 0.9-1.4 m were recorded in Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture. Further north, no inundation on land could be confirmed within the scope of the interviews. In Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture, one boat capsized in the Niida River. West of Itoigawa City, a runup of 2.1 m was observed at Shimao, Himi City. However, the JMA-MOT reported a 5.8 m runup at Funami in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture (https://www.jma.go.jp/jma/press/2401/26a/20240126_tsunamichousakekka.pdf).
The main results of the survey on Sado Island are as follows. The runup was relatively high along the southern coast of Sado Island, for example, 2.3 m at Sanse fishing port and 1.8 m at Hamochi fishing port. However, the interviews indicate that the tsunami did not exceed the quay wall along the east coasts from Sanse fishing port to Washizaki in the northern part of the island. At Washizaki, the tsunami did not flood the quay wall, but the interviews indicate that the tsunami come before dark around 16:30 that day. On the west coast from Washizaki to the south, there were many points where the tsunami did not flood the quay wall as well, but at Takose fishing port, the interviews indicated that the tsunami flooded the quay wall, and the run-up height was estimated to be 1.3 m for the first wave and 1.6 m for the second wave. The first wave arrived about five minutes after the tsunami warning. At the Etsumi fishing port further south, the run-up height was estimated to be 1.4 m based on scattered debris and eyewitness account.
The main findings in Hakui, Ishikawa Prefecture, to Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture are as follows. In Shibagaki, Hakui, the residents indicated the tsunami inundation up to the road close to their houses connecting to the coast, and the run-up height of 3.2 meters was estimated. To the west, the interviews from Kanazawa, Komatsu, Kaga, Maizuru Cities, Ine Town, and Kyotango City indicated that the tsunami did not flood the quay wall. In Kami Town, Hyogo Prefecture, a fisherman cooperative officer told that the tsunami flooded the quay wall only slightly, and a run-up height of 1.4 meters was measured. The inundation occurred between 20:00 and 20:30 on the 1st January. Further to the west, no interviews was obtained that the tsunami flooded the quay. At Morokui fishing port in Mihonoseki, Matsue City, a resident told that the tsunami rose about 30 cm.
The above information shows that the tsunami heights were relatively high in Himi, Itoigawa, Kashiwazaki, and the southern coast of Sado Island to the east of the source area, and in Hakui to the west of the source area, but in many other areas the tsunami heights were relatively small and did not flood the quay walls.
