After the Great East Japan Earthquake, efforts to mark disaster memorials in Japan on maps began led by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan(GSI). They can be found on Google Maps today. A lot of tsunami memorial monuments can be found in foregn countries too (Figure 1. Map of the tsunami monument constructed in Indonesia following the 2004 Sumatra Earthquake by the authors). Although there are more than 300 tsunami memorial monuments in the Tohoku region of Japan, the number of victims was approximately 17,000 in Tohoku.
There are only seven disaster memorial monuments in Ishikawa Prefecture, which was severely damaged by the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, and the number of disaster memorial monuments registered with the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan is at the lowest level in Japan. There is only one stone memorial monument related to earthquakes, the one for the new 2007 Noto Peninsula earthquake. On the other hand, people were able to evacuate from the tsunami, in the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake. I have presatetaion of the results of an emargency survey on the relationship between the number of disaster memorial monuments and disaster prevention awareness.
