Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Nagoya University

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences in the Graduate School of Environmental Studies (EES-GSES) conducts basic research and education in the earth and environmental sciences, treating the entire planet as one whole system. Our aim is to develop new human resources with the ability to study, evaluate, and analyze the environments of the Earth based on sound scientific knowledge.
The EES-GSES members are primarily responsible for undergraduate education in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences in the Faculty of Science. The Department of Earth and Planetary Science was established in 1949 as the first “Department of Earth Sciences” in Japan, and was renamed the “Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences” in 1992 to reflect a new view of the Earth as a planet.
The EES-GSES has two courses: Earth and Planetary Sciences and Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Science. Members of the Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research (ISEE), the Nagoya University Museum (NUM), the Disaster Mitigation Research Center, the Earthquake and Volcano Research Center, and the Education and Research Center for Sustainable Co-Development (ERCSCD) also participate in this department.
