[A-AS02] Advances in Tropical Cyclone Research: Past, Present, and Future

Sun. May 25, 2025 1:45 PM - 3:15 PM 102 (International Conference Hall, Makuhari Messe)

convener:Satoki Tsujino(Meteorological Research Institute), Sachie Kanada(Nagoya University), Kosuke Ito(Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University), Yoshiaki Miyamoto(Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, Keio University), Chairperson:Sachie Kanada(Nagoya University)

Tropical cyclones (TCs) cause severe disasters in many countries by torrential rainfall, destructive winds, and storm surge. Intense TCs caused severe damages in many areas of Japan recently; a record-breaking heavy rainfall occurred in western Japan due partly to Typhoon Prapiroon (2018), Kansai airport was forced to be closed by Typhoons Jebi and Trami in 2018, Typhoon Faxai (2019) caused a long-term shut-down in Chiba prefecture, and the track prediction for Typhoon Shanshan (2024) was unusually difficult as it approached Japan. As the surface temperature of ocean, - the energy source of TC -, increases with global warming, the change of TC activity in the future warming climate is expected. Therefore, it is an urgent problem to obtain deeper understanding of mechanisms and associated phenomena on TC genesis, intensity, structure, and motion, more accurate mid- to long-term projections of the TC parameters, and advanced observations and better forecast of TC. The TC researches are important for disaster prevention as well as the academic development, and hence do contribute to the future progress of earth and planetary science. In this session, we welcome papers on various aspects and fields of TC studies. We hope that the session will provide an opportunity to establish new researches among researchers in different fields, and a new direction for future TC researches.
