The Kuroshio large meander that occurred in the summer of 2017 is still ongoing, and the observational record for its duration is being updated. In addition, the Kuroshio Extension has been meandering significantly to the north since the fall of 2022. The Kuroshio large meander and the anomalous northward shift of the Kuroshio Extension significantly affect oceanic conditions. For example, it causes extreme increases in sea surface temperatures (i.e., marine heatwaves) off the Tokai and Sanriku regions. It has also been suggested that these influences extend to biogeochemistry, marine biological resources, and weather/climate. In this session, we welcome presentations from various perspectives, including physical oceanography, fisheries science, biogeochemistry, and atmospheric science, related to the Kuroshio large meander and the anomalous northward shift of the Kuroshio Extension. Through the exchange of information and discussion of various research, we will grasp our current understanding of the variability of the Kuroshio/Kuroshio Extension and its various influences and explore avenues for further research and interdisciplinary collaboration.
