[O-06] The dynamic evolution of the volcanic island of Nishinoshima: past, present, and future

Nishinoshima is a volcanic island, >800 km south of Honshu. The volcano started effusive lava flow eruption on 2013 to create a new island and about 10 years have passed. The formation of new land by magma on an isolated island in the ocean, far from land, is a natural laboratory where we can observe the process of life from zero to land. From a geological perspective, the eruptive activity of Nishinoshima, which began as a gentle lava flow and changed to an explosive eruption, may lead to a larger-scale eruption in the future.
Although there are many difficulties involved in researching remote volcanoes far from the land, researchers from different fields are pooling their knowledge and wisdom to advance their research. In this session, researchers from various fields beyond the framework of earth science will share their perspectives on the current state of Nishinoshima and discuss the future of the island together. We welcome the participation of all people, including the general public those who once have seen Nishinoshima in the TV program, who are interested in what Nishinoshima is like now and what will happen to it in the future.
