[O-12] 2025 Myanmar Earthquake and its disaster

Sat. May 24, 2025 1:45 PM - 3:15 PM Online (オンライン)

Chairperson:Takashi Azuma(National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology), Chairperson:Kazuo Tamura

On March 28, 2025, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred in central Myanmar, with over 3,600 casualties reported. This region was known among researchers as an area of active crustal movement, and it was also pointed out that it was an earthquake gap area. We will share information about the mechanism of this devastating earthquake that occurred in Asia and the extent of the damage caused. We will also look back at the geoscientific knowledge that was known in advance and explore ways to apply the lessons learned from this earthquake to future earthquake disaster prevention. In addition, the collapse of a high-rise building under construction in Bangkok, Thailand, 1,000 km from the epicenter, requires further attention as an issue of the long-period and long-duration seismic motion that is affecting the increasing number of large structures in Japan. This session will be hold as a Public Session, so that we welcome participants from not only scientists but also the general public.
