[S-SS04] Seismological advances in the ocean

Thu. May 29, 2025 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM 201A (International Conference Hall, Makuhari Messe)

convener:Ayumu Mizutani(International Research Institute of Disaster Science, Tohoku University), Takashi Tonegawa(Research and Development center for Earthquake and Tsunami, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology), Tatsuya Kubota(National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience), Chairperson:Tatsuya Kubota(National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience), Ayumu Mizutani(International Research Institute of Disaster Science, Tohoku University)

Advances in ocean-bottom seismic observations with seismometers, hydrophones, and pressure gauges have provided us with the opportunity to study seismicity, subsurface structures, earthquake and tsunami generation, and wave phenomena in offshore areas. Permanent (cabled) observatories enable long-term monitoring for these targets, and deployments of dense temporary arrays or fiber optic technologies produce higher-resolution researches. Also, such developments in ocean seismology have invoked the community to create data processing and analyzing techniques. The purpose of this session is to share recent advances in the ocean seismology, such as seismicity, seismic velocity structure conducted from active and passive approaches, progresses in the development of seafloor instrumentation, processing and analyzing techniques for offshore seismic datasets, findings of submarine earthquakes, volcanic activities, and relevant tsunamis, observation of the seafloor strong motion, characterization of ambient noise and interpretation of its sources, propagation processes of various waves in the atmosphere, ocean, and solid Earth recorded by ocean instruments, and all relevant topics. This session welcomes offshore observations or analyses related to recent offshore major earthquakes, e.g., the Noto and Hyuga-nada in Japan and the Hualien in Taiwan. We recommend presentations by early-career researchers and students who would like to try the presentation in an international session.
