Optic fiber sensing techniques for measuring strain, vibration, and thermal data are utilized not only in engineering and exploration geophysics as a developer but also in various research fields of earth science, including seismology, geodesy, and volcanology. Techniques such as DAS, DSS, and DTS provide high-performance capabilities, enabling high-density and highly sensitive measurements for onshore and offshore earth science observations that surpass conventional measurements. On the other hand, challenges remain in performing integrated analysis of optical fiber sensing strain data alongside velocity and acceleration seismographs. The goals of this session are to contribute to the advancement of earth science by sharing and discussing ideas related to observations, data analysis methods, and broad applications, which can mutually help enhance each study with respect to optic fiber sensing. We will also explore how fiber optic sensing technology can address future challenges in geoscience and its potential to initiate new research areas, such as the development of next-generation observation networks and automated data analysis technologies.
