Open Access Journal "Progress in Earth and Planetary Science" (PEPS) of Japan Geoscience Union (JpGU) received an impact factor of 3.5 in 2023, which is ranked as Q1 (top 25%) in Category 'Geoscience Multidisciplinary'. Recently, PEPS strengthened the editorial board in response to increasing submissions. One the other hand, Cabinet Office of Japan announced specific measures on "Key Principle in Realizing Immediate Open Access of Scholarly Publishing". Immediate open access of academic papers will be made compulsory for research results created by competitive research funding systems such as Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI). Further, academic papers as well as their evidence data will be asked to archive in information infrastructures such as institutional repositories. In this session, specialists on open access and open sciences will be invited and discuss on current status and future possibilities of open access journals including PEPS, immediate open access, and institutional repositories.
