The current third artificial intelligence (AI) boom that began at the beginning of the 21st century is still going strong, owing to the generalization of hardware such as GPU computers and the establishment of software such as machine learning libraries. AI technology has been actively used in various fields of earth and planetary sciences, where large-scale simulations and large amounts of data are the basis of studies. Since a number of big projects based on collaboration with AI experts are being conducted, the integration of AI and earth and planetary sciences has now formed one of the fields in earth and planetary sciences.
In collaboration with the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, this session consists of invited talks by leading AI researchers and earth and planetary scientists using AI technology, and provides an interdisciplinary discussion on the current status and future vision of AI research in earth and planetary sciences.
