Through chemical reactions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), photochemical oxidants (Ox, mainly ozone (O3) are produced in the atmosphere. The environmental quality standard (EQS) for Ox in Japan was established in 1973; however, this EQS has not been met at most monitoring stations in Japan. An important aspect of Ox pollution in Japan is the transboundary air pollution issue in East Asia. To investigate this issue, numerical modeling is a valuable approach to understanding the long-range transport of air pollution over East Asia. Such modeling is generally evaluated by routine measurement networks, and it is also general that the network was limited at the surface level. For fostering our understanding of the transboundary air pollutants, the measurement of vertical profile is required. In this study, the vertical measurement of air quality using a drone was performed at Fukue Island, Nagasaki Prefecture, located in the westernmost part of Japan. The intensive campaign was conducted in May 2024, and a total of ten times vertical Ox profile data from the surface to 1000 m were obtained. To support this drone measurement dataset, we also configured the numerical modeling to simulate the vertical profile. The model can capture the vertical Ox profile in the latter part of the campaign; however, the model failed to mimic the measured Ox in the first part. Due to the passing of high-pressure system from the Asian continent, the behavior of the simulated planetary boundary layer was complex during the intensive campaign. Thus, we will further conduct meteorological simulation and discuss the role of meteorology on the vertical Ox profile in this conference.
