[AAS11-P11] Validation of black carbon concentration data obtained by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with ground-based measurements

Black carbon (BC) is produced by incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and forest fires, and can contribute to global warming by absorption of solar radiation. BC originating in the Asian continent reaches Japan due to long-range transport by westerlies. However, the detailed distribution of BC concentrations is not clear. So far, we developed a novel unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system for BC measurements equipped with a miniaturized aethalometer (MicroAeth AE51, Aethlabs, USA), and obtained vertical profile data of BC concentrations from the ground to about 150 m altitude over Akita. In this study, we try to validate the BC concentration data by the UAV, comparing with ground-based BC concentration data in mountainous area. Here we show the results of simultaneous observations at Mt. Kanpu in Oga, Akita Prefecture, Japan, in September and November 2024. The BC concentration data obtained by UAV in September were lower than the ground-based data, while the results in November revealed that the difference between the two BC concentrations was small.
