The sea surface temperature (SST) is an essential parameter for geophysical science, and microwave (MW) sensors are playing an important role in remote sensing SST. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) provides a MW SST which is retrieved from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-2 (AMSR2) data. The AMSR2 can observe the ocean below clouds whereas its low spatial resolution of ~30 km is a disadvantage of the AMSR2 SST. The low spatial resolution is further degraded to reduce noise in retrieved AMSR2 SST. The spatial resolution is as important as the accuracy of retrieved SSTs, however the spatial resolution and the accuracy are in a trade-off relation.
A two-step filter (TSF) was developed to improve the trade-off. The TSF reduces noise in L1b data with a minimum loss in spatial resolution and improves the trade-off. The TSF was demonstrated by comparison of AMSR2 and Himawari SSTs, showing the spatial resolution and RMSD of AMSR2 SST improved from 59 km and 0.52 K to 50 km and 0.30 K, respectively. The presentation will provide an outline of the TSF and the validation results.
