This study investigates a potential use of passive microwave observations from a CubeSat for global data assimilation system to improve numerical weather prediction. Recently, the development of microwave sounders onboard CubeSat is active over the world, and high frequent observations obtained from CubeSat constellations have a potential to improve representation of atmospheric fields and weather forecast. To do that, this study utilizes the Time-Resolved Observations of Precipitation structure and storm Intensity with a Constellation of Smallsats (TROPICS) mission's data. The quality of the TROPICS data is evaluated to prepare for data assimilation experiments of the TROPICS.
This study uses a previous version of the operational global data assimilation system at Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The Radiative Transfer for TOVS (RTTOV) is used to simulate brightness temperatures observed from the TROPICS Millimeter-wave Sounder (TMS) for all-sky conditions. The brightness temperature differences between the observation and simulation (O-B) are analyzed to evaluate the quality of the TROPICS data and to develop its assimilation processings from 6th to 14th August 2021.
The statistics of O-B and its characteristics are similar to that reported by previous studies. In the meeting, detailed analysis of O-B will be presented to enable the quality check for TROPICS data assimilation.
