A new method to quantify the oxygen consumption (respiration) rate in water columns by using a stable oxygen isotope as a tracer is developed. The O2 of which oxygen atoms have been replaced by 17O (17O2) is added to water samples in bottles. The added 17O2 is converted to H217O in the bottles through the oxidation (respiration) reaction. Therefore, the oxygen consumption rates can be estimated by measuring temporal variations in the 17O/16O ratios of H2O. By using this method, the oxygen consumption rates were measured in the water columns of subarctic and subtropical area in the western North Pacific to determine new production rate in each area.
