[EV01-01] Nishiki-e: Reflecting an Era, Namazu-e: Depicting Earthquakes and Disasters
Nishiki-e: multi-colored woodblock prints established in the late Edo period. In this special talk session, we will explain their nature as a medium, their aspects as historical materials, and their diverse expressions developed to circumvent publication regulations. Also, namazu-e, a type of nishiki-e, were issued in large quantities immediately after the 1854 Edo Earthquake. We will also explain the earthquake and disaster that formed their background.
