[G01-08] A New Form of Science Communication Utilizing Virtual Characters -Fascination of Earth and Planetary Sciences Conveyed by VTuber-
Keywords:Virtual YouTuber, VTuber, Outreach
In recent years, Virtual YouTubers (commonly known as VTubers), who use virtual avatars to live stream and upload videos on YouTube, have gained popularity, particularly among young people. VTubers are now being utilized not only on YouTube, but also in collaborations with ministries and agencies and in the field of regional revitalization.
Typically, VTuber content consists of casual conversations, singing, and gaming. However, some VTubers focus on disseminating information about specific academic fields. Their entertainment value and accessibility allow them to engage with audiences who previously had little interest in academic subjects. Additionally, the ability to interact with viewers in real time during live stream has gained attention as a new form of interactive science communication.
I debuted as Madoka Hoshimi in September 2021 as a VTuber specializing in space-related topics, with a particular focus on planetary science. My activities include explanatory live streams on space science, speaking engagements at various events and research conferences, collaborations with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, and the projection of a collaborative planetarium program with the Hiratsuka City Museum.
In this presentation, I will introduce specific examples of my activities and discuss the impact and challenges of using VTubers for outreach efforts.
