CTBTO regularly conducts the NDC Preparedness Exercise (NPE). Volunteer NDCs (Germany, Italy, etc.) firstly set exercise scenarios (partially processing data for creating the virtual event). Participant NDCs obtain SHI waveform data (seismic, hydroacoustic and infrasonic data) and radionuclide data at the International Monitoring System (IMS) and other institution’s stations. NDCs analyze these data and evaluate the analysis results according to their analytical capabilities.
At the NDC workshop, held every two years, the overall NPE scenario and methods for creating pseudo data for exercises are unveiled, and NDCs verify the analysis results. It is expected that conducting NPE on a regular basis will improve NDC's analysis skills, tools, and IDC data products as well as stimulate communication between NDC analysts and experts in various fields.
The NPE2024 scenario for analysis was as follows. The Andrantis (a fictional nation) NDC, located north from the Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, posted a request for support in analyzing data related to the suspected event on the NDC Forum (CTBTO internal site for NDC-related personnel), and released seismic waveform data of four seismic stations operated and managed by Andrantis NDC, as well as infrasonic data from two portable stations. Subsequently, a signal believed to be derived from the same event was also confirmed at IMS HA10 station, and hydroacoustic data was also released.
Two months after the first announcement of the Andrantis NDC, it was mentioned that samples collected at RN33 (Germany) on 27-28 January 2024 and 2 February 2024 as well as RN63 (Sweden) on 29-31 January 2024 contained high activity concentrations of Xe-133, suggesting that radioactive xenon may have been emitted by the same suspicious seismic event.
Based on the above information and observation data, participant NDCs analyzed the source of the event and whether it may have released radionuclides. Japan NDC-1 also participated in this exercise and our analysis approach and result will be introduced.
