[HCG25-P03] Analysis of stress tolerance to harsh environments in Shizosaccharomyces pombe spore
Keywords:Shizosaccharomyces pombe, spore, ultraviolet radiation, desiccation
The fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, is a unicellular eukaryote with cell division control and gene expression system similar to higher eukaryotes, which makes it a model organism for molecular and cell biology. S. pombe was adopted as a biological material for space exposure experiment on the outside of the International Space Station (ISS), and the exposure experiment is expected to contribute to the elucidation of the mechanisms of space environment adaptation in higher eukaryotes. S. pombe increases its ability to tolerate environmental stress by forming spores (dormant cells) under starvation conditions. Although the mechanism by which S. pombe enhances tolerance to harsh environments is being elucidated, there are still many unresolved aspects that await further analysis. To elucidate the environmental tolerance system of S. pombe spores, we focused on a protein localized on the outer membrane of the spores predicted by our analysis and compared the stress tolerance to UV irradiation and desiccation between wild-type and deficient strains.
