[MAG33-05] High-Temporal-Resolution Land Surface Reflectance Retrieval from Himawari-8/9 AHI

In recent years, the launch of third-generation geostationary satellites has provided high-temporal-resolution observations, gradually becoming an important data source for land surface monitoring. Japan’s Himawari-8/9 geostationary satellites, equipped with the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI), enable 10-minute interval observations over Asia and Oceania, offering new opportunities for land remote sensing applications.
In this study, we performed atmospheric correction on full-disk AHI data using a lookup table (LUT) based on the 6SV radiative transfer model. The corrected land surface reflectance (LSR) was evaluated against MODIS and MISR products. The results demonstrate a high level of consistency, particularly in the red and near-infrared bands, which are critical for vegetation monitoring, with correlation coefficients (r) exceeding 0.92. We have publicly released the atmospherically corrected AHI data to facilitate further research, providing a high-quality foundation for geostationary satellite-based land observations and advancing high-temporal-resolution remote sensing applications.
