Keywords:High Performance Computing, Large-scale simulation

MEXT conducted a three-year "Feasibility Study on Next-Generation Supercomputing Infrastructures" started in FY2022. This is a feasibility study of a supercomputer that will be the successor to Fugaku, or “post-Fugaku,” with a target completion date of around FY2028 to FY2030.

Two teams were selected to study and propose actual systems: one team with RIKEN and the other team with Kobe University. The RIKEN team worked with multiple vendors to examine various possibilities. The Kobe University team studied the system configuration with accelerators, based on the accelerator for deep learning applications that is being developed jointly with PFN.

The post-Futaku system is likely to be a combination of several proposals from the RIKEN team. On the other hand, the Kobe University team's proposal for a new accelerator and memory technology will continue to be evaluated and developed.

In this presentation, based on the results of the Kobe University team's study, the current status of semiconductor technology and high-performance processor architecture and the direction of progress in the near future will be reviewed, and the direction of post-Futaku and necessary application development will be discussed.
