[MGI31-05] Wave height detection and regular monitoring utilizing visual footage

*Kazutaka Kikuta1, Ken T. Murata1 (1.National Institute of Information and Communications Technology)

Keywords:optical flow, monitoring system, overtopping wave

We propose a wave height detection method using a moving object detection algorithm based on visual IoT technology. Visual IoT offers the advantage of capturing high-resolution and high-temporal-resolution images. Our system utilizes commercially available IP cameras, which are cost-effective and provide excellent performance. The system will continuously monitor the embankment and detect wave height. In this research, we evaluate the movement of optical flow vectors obtained from video frames to accurately detect the wave height. A plot of significant wave height is constantly output from the detection results.
