The "Data and Sample Research System for Whole Cruise Information in JAMSTEC” (DARWIN) is a database site managed by Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), and has been renewed since March, 2024. The current version of the DARWIN provides metadata of research cruises conducted by the JAMSTEC fleet, and the metadata include research cruise information and links to onboard measurement data acquired in the JAMSTEC cruises such as bathymetry, gravity, geomagnetism, ADCP and CTD data. In addition, the research cruise metadata have a link to a cruise report summarized after finishing the research cruise by science party, and the cruise report enables to access more detailed information of the research cruise. In order to improve findability in the internet space, a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is assigned for the research cruise metadata.
The DARWIN also provides metadata of dives carried out by the JAMSTEC submersibles (e.g., ROVs, HOV, AUVs), and the metadata have dive information and links to measurement data derived from equipment installed on a submersible. A cruise metadata is linked to metadata of dives operated in the cruise, and the dive metadata is also linked to metadata of the cruise and other dives conducted in the cruise. Therefore, the DARWIN enables us to access the comprehensive datasets acquired by the JAMSTEC fleet and submersibles working with the assigned DOIs for the cruise metadata.
In the JAMSTEC research cruises, geological, biological and seawater samples have been taken based on research objective of a cruise, and descriptive information of those samples have also been managed in the JAMSTEC. The renewed DARWIN has been planned to publish the sample information with the JAMSTEC cruise/dive data. Therefore, the JAMSTEC has developed a sample information site on the DARWIN and the DARWIN sample site will be launched in March, 2025. The sample information is summarized in a metadata file, and the sample metadata have links to the related cruise and dive metadata on the DARWIN.
Since DOI has been assigned to each metadata of the JAMSTEC research cruises as mentioned above, the research cruise metadata can be found on academic search sites (e.g., CiNii Research) using a DOI as a search key. If measurement data acquired in a research cruise are analyzed and used in a research paper summarized by a researcher, the researcher can cite a DOI of the cruise in the research paper as a reference. Therefore, the DARWIN data follows the FAIR data principles and contributes to the international data open access activity.
