[MGI31-P09] Improvement of the Research Vessel Status Information Database

The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) has developed and operates a research vessel status information database that stores information on vessel operations and downtime. This database aims to centrally manage the operational status of past research cruises and contribute to the efficient planning of future vessel operations. In this presentation, we introduce the recent upgrades to the database, which include two key features: the Enhancement of the Survey Area Search Function and the Integration of Marine Facilities Planning Data. Previously, the search function required users to manually enter the names of survey areas, which was a burden. With this update, a map display has been added to the search UI, allowing users to specify a region directly using cursor-based interactions. This enables users to visually set the search range, making the process more intuitive and efficient. A list of voyages with survey areas within the specified region is immediately displayed. Users can still utilize the previous search methods based on sea area names. On the other hand, Marine Facilities Planning (MFP) is a database system operated by our institute’s research vessel operation management department. It is used for creating research cruise proposal documents and implementation guidelines. The system stores basic information about research cruises, including research project names, chief scientists, observation details, exploration equipment used, and survey area latitude and longitude data. Previously, survey area latitude and longitude information was not digitized, and data files had to be manually created from the implementation guidelines. To alleviate this burden, we developed an application to automatically store data obtained from MFP into the research vessel status information database. Moving forward, we plan to analyze user behavior and consider further improvements. Enhancing the visualization of search results and integrating with other databases are also under consideration.
