[MIS10-01] Medieval to Modern Stone Cultures Explored through Stone Materials: Examples from Geoparks in Japan

★Invited Papers

*Norihito Kawamura1 (1.School of Regional Resource Management, Graduate School, University of Hyogo)

Keywords:Stone material, stone structure, archaeology, cultural geology

The speaker believes that stone is an essential material for considering geological resources, culture and industry. Although local stone materials have been featured in geoparks in Japan, the author expects that there are still piles of undiscovered materials. In this case, exploring the origin of the stone materials that make up the stone structures and clarifying the chronological changes in the distribution process of the stone materials will provide basic data for considering the relationship between geological resources and culture. In this presentation, the author will review some of the stone materials that he has studied and suggests ideas for their utilization in the geopark. Examples are as follows.
Early modern stone lanterns in San'in Kaigan Geopark (Kimachi-ishi and Miocene tuffs)
Medieval and early modern stone structures in the Setouchi Sanuki Geopark concept area
Early modern stone structures in the Kikai-jima Geopark concept area.
Modern quarry sites in Chokaisan Tobishima Geopark
