According to some academic papers to estimate on the leakage of plastic waste to the ocean or the environment, such as Jambeck et al. (2015), Asian developing countries are regarded as a major source of plastic pollution. Many developing Asian countries have developed action plans on plastic pollution and have implemented countermeasures, with support of developed countries and international donors.
On the other hand, some studies estimating the leakage of plastics to the ocean or environment, the waste collection rate was the most influential variable. These studies show that per capita plastic consumption in developing countries is lower than in developed countries, but volume of plastics leaked to the ocean or the environment by developing countries leaked more plastics to the ocean or the environment than developed countries, due to the mismanagement of plastic waste.
In addition, there are some leakage points other than municipal solid waste. Plastic used in agriculture such as capsules of slow-release-fertilizer, multi film for keeping moisture in soil and plastics sheet covering banana and palm in agriculture sector are likely to be leaked to the environment, if they do not have some countermeasures. It is also reported that plastic recycling factories also leak plastics, if recyclers do not have preventive measures to leak plastic to the environment. Processes of washing clothes also generate plastic pollution. To reduce plastic pollution, not only single use plastics, but other leakage points should be identified and implement proper counter measures.
