[MZZ41-09] J.J.Rein(1835-1918) opposed to Darwin’s theory of coral coral formation

Keywords:Rein, Darwin, coral reef, depression theory

After the voyage of the Beagle, Charls Darwin(1809-1883)published “The structure and distribution of coral reefs ” in1842. He insisted that coral reefs developed from Fringing Reef through Barrier Reef, to Atoll according to the island’s depression. There were objections just after the publication of the book but they disappeared soon.
Johanes Justus Rein(1835-1918)came to Japan in 1873-1875 to make research of industries and commerce of Japan on command of Prussian government. Before he came to Japan, he objected Darwin’s depression theory in 1870 and in 1881 after he came back to Prussia. What is his theory? What was his basis of his theory.
After Rein got doctoral degree in 1861 from the University of Rostock based on the dissertation of “The climate, Soil, and vegetation of Estonia”, he went to the Bermuda Islands in 1862 and 1862 as a private teacher of sons of Governor General Sir Harry Ordo and made research of coral reefs. He did not find any data on the depression of islands.
