Not only ocean science, but all earth sciences start with the establishment of standardised/harmonized observation protocols. The universally spreading observations in accordance with standardised protocols will enable a sufficient number of observations to be integrated and to provide information about the past and present. This will then pave the way for future predictions. In marine plastic research, these processes have been going on just in past decade and it is not yet a sufficiently mature research topic. Explicitly, it is also a research field with low hurdles for new commers such as yourselves. In my presentation, I will explain how ocean sciences have been developed by reviewing the history of the marine plastic research. How ocean plastics, which are hardly decomposed in the nature and are lighter than seawater, changes the ocean environment? Or robust ocean environment will be unaffected by ocean plastics? The ongoing response to plastic waste provides us with a good material for understanding the ocean environment.
