Keywords:ocean plastics, microplastics

Plastic litter from everyday life, passing through rivers to the sea, accounts for 80% of the marine plastic litter that drifts or washes ashore in the world's oceans. As it repeatedly washes ashore and drifts out to sea, it is degraded and is gradually fragmented to microplastics. These microplastics are easily ingested by micro-organisms such as zooplankton and other microorganisms to large marine organisms, raising concerns about their impact on marine ecosystems. This presentation will introduce the current state of marine plastic pollution based on the Atlas of Ocean Microplastics (AOMI [blue ocean] database), a database provided by Japan that archives the amount of floating microplastics in the world's oceans. The presentation will also present the latest research results on the fate and pathways of ocean plastics using a numerical model approach.
