Knowledge of volcanoes is useful when it comes to protecting oneself from volcanic hazards. This is because the phenomena that contribute to volcanic hazards are diverse, and a good knowledge of the characteristics of each phenomenon increases the chances of survival. For example, in the case of a volcanic eruption such as the 2014 eruption of Mt. Ontake, knowledge that dense rocks fly at high speeds in a ballistic trajectory enables the best evacuation strategy of “finding a place to hide quickly and passing the time.
Various volcanic disasters have occurred in Japan and may occur in the future. In this lecture, I would like to outline a survival guide for high school students to protect themselves from volcanic disasters that they may encounter in the future.
I would also like to introduce what I would like students to learn from subjects such as geography synthesis and basic geology in order to protect themselves from volcanic disasters.
