The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, which was launched based on a resolution of the UN General Assembly in 2017, has reached the halfway point toward the goal of 2030. Many countries, including Japan, and ocean-related international organizations have participated in the initiative to find posssible solutions for many challenging ocean issues based on reliable scientific results, while several important results have been achieved. Now that we are approaching the second half of the decade, the importance of "collaboration between science and society," including the promotion of citizen science, has been reiterated in order to achieve the initial goals of UN Ocaen Decade. Along this context, it is recognized that collaboration with the next generation of ECOP leaders and those involved in indegenous, local and traditional knowledge is essential. The presentation will provide some topics, including international trends promoted by UNESCO/IOC, to exchange opinions among wide range of staleholders on the future direction.
