[O11-P50] Sky Wizardry in Hitachi: A Meteorological Exploration

Hitachi is currently facing a serious problem of population decline. One of the city's greatest natural assets is its stunning combination of sky, sea, and mountains. To help promote our hometown, we aimed to encourage interest in Hitachi from a meteorological perspective.
The purpose of this study was to predict the appearance of the sky and automatically post sky images on Instagram, with a particular focus on clear skies in Hitachi. The sky photos used in this study were taken at the Hitachi Municipal Weather Forecast Office.
We analyzed the RGB values of the images and explored their relationship with various weather conditions using machine learning and multiple regression analysis.
Our findings revealed that the RGB values of clear skies are significantly correlated—at a confidence level of over 95%—with temperature, solar radiation, solar altitude, water vapor content, and visibility. Among these, visibility showed the strongest influence on RGB values.
We believe that temperature, solar radiation, and solar altitude are related to Rayleigh and Mie scattering, while water vapor and visibility are linked to the concentration of particles in the atmosphere.
