[O11-P90] Climate-Related Variations in Coral Growth Rates on Kikai Island, Japan
Keywords:Coral growth, Island shape, Environment, Climate
Previous research investigated how differences in climate conditions across Kikai Island affect coral growth rates. In the northern part of the island, where strong north winds and wave activity are common, coral tended to grow more slowly. Fossil corals of the same species and approximate age were collected from multiple locations around the island. Using CT imaging and image processing software, the width of growth rings was measured. The results showed that coral growth was slowest in Sakamine and Onotsu, and fastest in Hanareba. Future research will focus on coral samples from terraces of different ages and from the southwest direction to explore the relationship between wind patterns, coral growth, and the island’s geological formation.
