In 2020, AGU launched an ambitious strategic plan aimed at building on its century-long legacy of promoting discovery science by significantly enhancing solution science. This pivotal plan seeks to transform the Earth and space science community into a proactive force addressing urgent societal challenges such as climate change, food security, and the preservation of global ecosystems. Geoscience is the essential discipline of the 21st century. AGU envisions a dynamic shift—making science not only usable but actively applied in real-world solutions.

Geoscientists possess a wealth of knowledge and skills that can significantly enhance lives on both local and global scales. They have powerful tools for driving societal progress through interdisciplinary collaboration and meaningful community engagement. As the effects of climate change become more severe, an inspiring movement of scientists is emerging, dedicated to working directly with communities to develop practical solutions. Geoscientists’ passion for scientific discovery can ignite innovative solutions through diverse projects, impactful initiatives, advocacy efforts, and robust knowledge-sharing platforms.

This presentation will outline the transformative changes AGU has implemented since the launch of its strategic plan, highlighting the integration of solution-based science within the organization. Topics will include the evolution of publications, advancements in scientific meetings, and targeted initiatives addressing the climate crisis, all while fostering an inclusive scientific community committed to science-informed solutions. Together, we will explore how AGU is not merely responding to challenges but is actively reshaping the future of science for the betterment of society.
