Over fourteen years have passed since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (F1NPS) accident. While the environmental dynamics of the vast quantities of radionuclides released into the environment by the accident are becoming clearer, challenges remain to be resolved, such as the transfer processes linking different spheres: atmosphere, forests, urban areas, cultivated land, rivers, groundwater, and the ocean. Research into environmental radioactivity dynamics not only contributes to preparedness for future severe accidents at nuclear facilities but also plays a vital role as a tracer for understanding environmental dynamics.
To further advance research related to the F1NPS accident, understanding the chemical reactions occurring during these transfer processes is essential. Furthermore, alongside radioactive caesium, which has been the primary focus of research to date, it is also necessary to grasp the dynamics of trace, rare long-lived nuclides and naturally occurring radioactive nuclides, and to organise these as sustainably usable radioactive isotope tracers. Furthermore, the ocean release of ALPS-treated water, being advanced as part of the F1NPS decommissioning work, is scheduled to continue for over 30 years. Continuous and highly transparent information dissemination from Japan to the international community is indispensable.
This session aims to deepen cross-disciplinary discussions on new challenges in research concerning environmental radioactivity dynamics following the F1NPS accident.
