[A-AS03] [EE] International Field Campaign - Years of the Maritime Continent (YMC)

Sun. May 21, 2017 10:45 AM - 12:15 PM 301A (International Conference Hall 3F)

convener:Kunio Yoneyama(Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology / Department of Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Land Processes Research), Chidong Zhang(NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory), Tetsuya Takemi(Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University), Chairperson:Tetsuya Takemi(Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University)

To elucidate the mystery over the Maritime Continent (MC), which hosts various weather and climate phenomena and acts as a heat engine for the global atmospheric circulation, a two-year long international field campaign, Years of the Maritime Continent (YMC), will take place from July 2017 through July 2019. The unique feature of this campaign is attributed to the synergy among various components; local operational agencies and research institutes/universities from the world, long-term monitoring and several intensive observations, observations and numerical modeling, and so on. Intensive observations will focus on specific topics such as diurnal cycle of precipitation, the Madden-Julian oscillation, Indonesian through flow, stratosphere-troposphere interaction, aerosol-cloud interaction, etc.

Thus, this session is designed to review the current knowledge on these topics. This session solicits contributions from modeling, observations, and theory on all aspects of the atmosphere, ocean, and their interaction in the MC region.
