[U-05] [EJ] Innovative research at the intersection of geoscience and health science

Sun. May 21, 2017 10:45 AM - 12:15 PM 101 (International Conference Hall 1F)

convener:Geoffrey S Plumlee(U.S. Geological Survey), Christine McEntee(American Geophysical Union), Fumiko KASUGA(National Institute for Environmental Studies), Chairperson:Christine McEntee(American Geophysical Union), Chairperson:Fumiko Kasuga(National Institute for Environmental Studies)

The science done by many of the disciplines represented in AGU and JpGU has direct or indirect application to the health and well being of human populations worldwide. Helping foster new collaborations between the geosciences and health sciences is a key opportunity for AGU and JpGU to enhance their impact well beyond the earth/planetary sciences, and to learn from scientists from other disciplines with whom our scientists have not frequently cooperated. For example, AGU has recently founded a new journal, GeoHealth, devoted to publishing transdisciplinary research articles at the intersection of earth, planetary, and health sciences. This session will highlight innovative transdisciplinary research on diverse linkages between earth/planetary processes and human health, such as geogenic toxicants, environmental controls on emerging contaminants and pathogens, and the environmental health impacts of disasters. The session will provide a unique perspective on the state of and future opportunities for transdisciplinary geohealth science.
