[EP-18] ANTIOXIDANT THERAPY- Can it be the wonder drug to prevent implant failure??
[Abstract]
Objective: Owing to the remarkable success of dental implants, there has been growing interest in identifying factors associated with implant failure.1 Oxidative stress has been related to damaged biomolecules, such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids and can promote cell death especially in smokers. Use of Antioxidants in reducing Oxidative stress is well documented however, further clinical studies are required to substantiate the claims particularly in smokers.2
Method: Measurement of Implant stability was done using Resonance frequency analysis, suggested by Meredith in 1998, which is a non-invasive diagnostic method that measures implant stability.3 Measurement of crestal bone loss will be done using Peri-apical radiographs using a paralleling technique will be analyzed with the use of digital Software with an accuracy of 0.1 mm on the day of surgery and 3 months after implant placement.3
Results and Discussion: The Systemic Review and pilot study concluded that Antioxidants can provide better results in decreasing the peri-implant inflammation and may help in osseointegration to establish Antioxidant as a post operative regimen for implant patients especially in patients with smoking habits.4,5
