[Abstract]
[Introduction]
Ocular prostheses are essential for helping people who have lost their sight through trauma, surgery, tumours, or congenital eye defects to regain both the appearance and functionality of their eyes1. The successful creation and fitting of a patient's custom-made ocular prosthesis for an eye defect is described in this case study.
[Case Summary and Treatment Details]
A 26-year-old male patient following enucleation left oculi due to accident. This patient already had an ill-fitting fabricated ocular prosthesis but unsatisfied with the result. Vaseline was used on eyebrow and eyelash of patient before making any impression and patient was instructed to close his eyes during the initial impression. The initial impression was made with irreversible hydrocolloid to fabricate an individual custom tray. Final impression of patient’s eye socket was made using individual acrylic resin custom tray and light body addition silicone as the impression material2. Wax model of the ocular prosthesis was made based on the final impression and was tried on the patient which furthermore processed with white acrylic3. Careful inspection and drawing was required in order to fabricate the prostheses.4
[Progress and Discussion]
The excellent aesthetic match, increased comfort, and boosted confidence of the patient were all made possible by the custom prosthesis, which ultimately resulted in an improved quality of life5. Patient was satisfied with his new ocular prosthesis. Compared to manufactured ocular prosthesis, custom-made prostheses offer superior fitting, comfort, and aesthetics because they mirror the contralateral patient's natural eye.
