[IPROSI-5] Rehabilitation of Extensive Mid-Facial Defects: Silicone Facial Prosthesis with Magnetic Attachment

[Abstract]
[Introduction]
Mid-facial defects can cause functional, aesthetic, and psychological problems that harm the patient's quality of life. An aesthetic and stable prosthesis design can be valuable for patients who have lost part of their face due to surgical excision. Facial prostheses can increase patient self-confidence so that they can influence the patient's lifestyle more positively. This clinical report describes the rehabilitation of mid-facial defects, namely by creating an obturator with a magnet that connects to a silicon facial prosthesis
[Case Summary and Treatment Details]
A 52-year-old male patient was referred to the Dental and Oral Hospital of Universitas Sumatera Utara for maxillofacial rehabilitation. The patient has a history of radical maxillectomy involving complete nasal resection including partial of the lower lip et causa basalioma. The treatment plan is to restore mid-facial defects including the maxilla, cheek, nose, and lip with obturator and silicone prosthesis using room temperature vulcanizing silicone (RTV Silicone). Magnets were incorporated into the obturator and silicon to aid in the retention of the facial prosthesis.
[Progress and Discussion]
Mid facial defects pose challenges not only in treatment planning, but also on how fabricating and delivering a prosthesis that can change patients’ life. Obturators with magnet-supported and silicone prostheses are a reliable alternative to surgery in selected cases and can significantly improve retention of the prosthesis, resulting in a stable and aesthetic facial prosthesis.
