【Purpose】
It has been demonstrated that higher aerobic capacity leads to decreased mortality. However, little is known about cardiopulmonary responses to exercise onset under the influence of aerobic capacity. Aim of this study was to predict aerobic threshold(AT)in people with heart failure with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction(HFpEF).
【Methods】
19 male subjects(range:36-82 years)with HFpEF were participated in this study. They had been admitted to hospital for cardiac rehabilitation due to their HFpEF. In the study, participants underwent a sub-maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test to determine oxygen uptake at their AT level, using cycle ergometry. The area of under oxygen uptake curve(VO2AUC)from exercise onset to initial four minutes period on warming up phase, age and left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF)were elected to examine in a multivariate analysis to predict AT. The forward stepwise method was used for the multivariate analysis with entry and removal P-values set at 0.05 and 0.10, respectively. Statistical differences with a P-value<0.05 were considered significant. All analysis was done using IBM SPSS statistics(version 22).
【Results】
Mean(SD)VO2AUC was 8.6(2.3)ml/kg, mean LVEF was 57.7(13.6)% and age was 65.6(11.2)years. However, VO2AUC was entered separately into the multivariate model(scandalized partial regression coefficient 0.60, P<0.01, 95% confidence interval;0.11-0.61)and the coefficient of determination was 0.32(P<0.05)in a multiple regression analysis.
【Discussion】
These results suggested that an easily and safely obtained measurement of physical fitness is related to VO2AUC from exercise onset to initial four minutes period on warming up phase. Therefore, VO2AUC from exercise onset to initial four minutes period on warming up phase could be powerful predictor to assess aerobic capacity in people with HFpEF.
