Keywords:golf, reading lines in golf, embodied knowledge, tacit knowledge, affordance
Putting is said to occupy 40% of the total score in golf. Being able to “read lines” , which is to find the ideal trajectory for the ball to get it into the hole, is necessary to have great performance in putting. However, playing golf deals with the natural environment, in which viewpoints involved in line reading are diverse. Those who are able to flexibly attend to various viewpoints are professionals of reading lines. What thought processes are needed to determine accurate lines? How can golfers develop high skills of line-reading? The author has been a golfer for 20 years and the purpose of this study is to generate hypotheses about these questions. In order to fulfill his purpose, he has brought in life a mindset of finding virtual putter courses in places and roads in his daily life. As a result, he has found 45 virtual courses around the landscape of the university campus. For each course, by being self-aware of relevant viewpoints, he verbalized how he interpreted those viewpoints. Throughout this study, he has earned a new hypothesis of how to read lines. The trial of finding virtual putting course in life may contribute to the development of abilities of line reading.
