[3Rin4-92] Strategies for introducing uncertain objects into conversations

〇Yoshiko Kawabata1, Toshihiko Matsuka2 (1.National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics, 2.Chiba University)

Keywords:Dailogue analysis, Reference expression

We quantitatively analyzed how people came to mutually recognize particular referent objects using Japanese Map-Task Corpus. In particular, we examined how often what Clark and Wilers-Gibbs called “ installment noun phrase”was used, and when it used what type of responses the hearers made. The results showed that if landmarks were present in both instruction givers’and followers’maps (i.e., shared condition), the hearers’responses increased when the utterances were segmented. On the other hand, if landmarks were present in only one of them (i.e., non- shared condition), the frequencies of hearers ’responses did not change even when the utterances were segmented nor when there were silent pauses.
