[4Rin1-49] Designing and Implementing a Support System for Simplifying Expository Text on Japanese Cultural Assets
Keywords:Text Simplification, Natural Language Generation, Human Support System
We propose a text simplification support system, specifically tailored for expository text on Japanese cultural assets. It is designed to help non-professional writers to create simplified versions of text that can be easily read and understood by learners of the Japanese language and children. The principal feature of the system is that it generates candidate expressions for rewriting and provides information for human decision making. Our system consists of four major modules: (1) sentence splitting, (2) simplification of sentence-ending expressions, (3) lexical simplification, and (4) generation of simple explanations of technical terms. In this study, as a starting point, we implemented the sentence-splitting module by defining rules to separate coordinate, adverbial, and attributive clauses. The evaluation results show that the module has achieved accuracies of 0.86 for coordinate and adverbial clauses and 0.79 for attributive clauses, which suggests the usefulness of this module as a human support system.
