In this talk, I will review the transformation brought about by deep learning over the past 12 years. Referencing my own research and focusing on dichotomies like passive versus active learning, and symbolic versus physical intelligence, I will analyze the reasons why the center of AI research is shifting towards industry. It is my view that the next AI breakthrough is more likely to emerge not from research labs, but from companies deploying products used at scale globally. Now that it’s clear deep learning will significantly shape humanity’s future, I urge it is time for more AI researchers to also focus on societal impact and take action beyond academic publications.
